Tips for Using Acrobat
Reader for Viewing Maps
After a PDF file has been opened, look at the toolbar underneath the main
menu at the top of the screen. You will see a variety of buttons, or icons,
including a print button, a hand, and a magnifying glass. These will be
the primary tools you will use for navigating around the map. Use the
magnifying glass to zoom in on a particular area of the map by placing
the cursor at one corner of an imaginary box, then dragging it diagonally
across the screen to zoom to the area desired. Use the hand to pan around
that area by dragging the mouse cursor from the top of the screen downwards,
or from one side to the other. In order to zoom out use the View button
in the main menu. This will also bring up a menu with more options including
hot keys (ctrl -, ctrl +, etc). You can also use the arrow buttons on
the toolbar to return to the previous view or go to the next view (placing
the mouse cursor on a button will bring up a brief explanation of it’s
use). These maps can be printed on almost any color printer, but will
only print up to the size that the printer can handle. They were originally
made for printing on a sheet up to 3 feet by 4 feet, and the level of
detail reflects the original format. And, as a last resort, there is always
the Help button on the main menu.
The City and County of Butte-Silver Bow is in the process of reviewing digitized floodplain maps for the Butte-Silver Bow jurisdictional area. It is important to know that the current and proposed floodplain maps regulate most of the streams within the urban area of Butte, but also many of the creeks within the rural areas. The Big Hole River also has floodplain maps. As such, any property owner living adjacent to a stream in Butte-Silver Bow take the time to review the proposed maps.
The digitized maps will allow a private landowner, lender, realtor, developer, insurance agent, etc. to view a particular property and/or structure on an aerial photo that also includes the boundaries of Special Flood Hazard Areas (commonly known as the floodway and 100-year floodplain) overlaid on the aerial photo. The aerial photos with Special Flood Hazard Area boundaries overlaid on them will greatly simplify the process of identifying where a particular parcel and/or structure is located in regards to streams that have been determined to have a flood risk.
Butte-Silver Bow is just starting the review period that lasts 90 days. During the 90 day review period anyone that owns property, or is considering purchasing property, that is located adjacent to a stream or the Big Hole River is strongly encouraged to review the maps on this web-site to identify whether the property and/or structure(s) is located within or close to a regulated floodplain as determined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The proposed maps are being displayed on the Butte-Silver Bow website to allow citizens the opportunity to review the maps without having to review a hard copy in the Planning Office. Any questions regarding the digitized maps can be forwarded to Steve Hess of the Planning Department.
